Genuine Connection, Not Just a Service

Companion Care for Seniors

Loneliness among older adults is one of the most significant and most overlooked health challenges of our time. Research has shown it is as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. For seniors living alone in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, regular, meaningful company can be life changing.

Serene Assist’s companion care service is built around one simple idea: your loved one deserves a kind, familiar presence who is genuinely interested in them, not just ticking a care checklist. This is not nursing. This is not clinical supervision. This is real companionship – tea, conversation, shared interests, and the simple comfort of having someone there who cares.

What a Typical

Companion Visit Looks Like

Every visit is tailored to your loved one’s preferences. Here’s what a typical 2–3 hour visit might include:

Arrival and check-in

A warm greeting, a cup of tea, and a catch-up

Conversation and connection

Discussing news, family updates, memories, or current events

Shared activities

Card games, puzzles, reading aloud, looking through photo albums, watching a favourite show together, or gentle garden walks

Light practical assistance

Helping sort post, make a phone call, or organise a cupboard

Observation and reporting

We discreetly note any changes in mood, appetite, mobility, or environment and report to the family

Who Benefits Most

Companion care is especially valuable for seniors who:

Live alone and feel isolated

Whose family lives abroad or in other cities

Have recently lost a partner or close friend

Have stepped back from driving or social activities

Are recovering from an illness and need gentle re-engagement with daily life

The Difference Between a

Companion and a Carer

Companion (Serene Assist) Clinical Carer
Provides social and emotional support Provides medical and physical care
Engages in conversation and activities Administers medication and treatments
Visits on a scheduled basis Often full-time or live-in
Feels like a friend visiting Feels like a clinical service
Ideal for independent seniors who are lonely Necessary for seniors with medical needs

Many families use both – a clinical carer for medical needs and a Serene Assist companion for social and emotional wellbeing.

More Than a Visit

Our companions notice when something isn’t right – whether that’s a change in mood, a concern about a medication, or a sign that additional support might be needed. We see ourselves as your eyes and ears, providing families with the peace of mind that comes from knowing someone trustworthy is keeping a caring eye on their loved one.
