Helping a Parent Downsize or Move Home Later in Life

For many older South Africans, the family home eventually becomes too much. The garden is too big, the stairs too steep, the rates too high, the security too stressful. But moving, at any age, is hard. For someone in their late seventies or eighties, it can feel impossible.

When to start the conversation

Long before it’s urgent. The best moves happen while your parent is still healthy enough to actively choose the next home, not after a fall has forced the decision.

Signs it may be time:

  • The garden has become a burden rather than a pleasure
  • Rooms stand unused
  • Stairs are being avoided
  • Rates, repairs and security are eating into the budget
  • Your parent admits the house feels too quiet or too much

Options to consider

  • Stay and adapt, a stair lift, a bathroom renovation, a smaller garden service, or live-in support.
  • Move to a smaller home, a townhouse in a secure complex.
  • Retirement village (independent living) , Bryanston Retirement, Olivedale Care Centre, several Rand Aid villages.
  • Assisted living, a serviced apartment with meals, housekeeping and care on hand.
  • Frail care, full residential care for those who can no longer live independently.

Planning the move itself

  • Start sorting months in advance. Decades of belongings can’t be processed in a weekend.
  • Photograph what gets given away, a photo album of the old home softens the loss.
  • Recreate familiar arrangements in the new space: same chair on the same side of the room, same picture above the bed.
  • Plan the first week carefully, arrange visits, meals and outings so the new home doesn’t feel lonely from day one.

The emotional side

Moving home in your eighties is rarely just about logistics. It’s about leaving the place where children grew up, where a spouse may have died, where decades of life happened. Expect grief, even when the move is the right decision. Don’t rush past it.

We don’t run removals, but we help with everything around them. See how we support families through a move.

How Serene Assist helps

We accompany your parent on visits to potential new homes, sit with them while they sort through belongings, transport items to family or charity, and provide extra companion visits in the first few weeks after the move, when the new house is still finding its rhythm.

Not sure where to start? Book a free care consultation. We’ll meet your parent, understand their needs, and suggest the right level of support.
