The Best Activities and Outings for Seniors

One of the most effective ways to maintain physical and mental health in later life is to stay active and engaged. But “active” doesn’t mean running marathons – it means getting out of the house, seeing new things, and spending time with others. Here are our favourite activities for seniors in the Johannesburg North area:

  • Emmarentia Botanical Gardens

Flat, paved paths perfect for walkers and wheelchairs. Beautiful rose garden and indigenous plant collection. Quiet weekdays are ideal. Parking tip: Use the main entrance off Olifants Road – closest to the flat paths.

  • Montecasino Bird Park

Undercover, temperature-controlled – comfortable year-round. Gentle pace, plenty of seating. Interactive bird feedings at set times. Best time: Weekday mornings when it’s quiet.

  • Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

Famous for its waterfall and Verreaux’s Eagles. Wheelchair-accessible paths in the lower garden. Excellent restaurant on-site for a post-walk tea. Note: The upper trails are steep – stick to the lower gardens for mobility-limited visitors.

  • Delta Park

One of Johannesburg’s hidden gems. Flat walking paths, bird hides, and a small environmental centre. Very quiet during the week. Dogs welcome.

  • Bryanston Organic Market (Saturday Mornings)

Fresh produce, artisanal goods, live music. Social, friendly atmosphere – many regulars are seniors. Best time: Arrive at 9am before it gets crowded.

  • The Cradle of Humankind

A longer day outing but hugely rewarding. Maropeng Visitor Centre is wheelchair accessible with excellent exhibits. Excellent restaurant on site.

  • Theatre at Montecasino

The Pieter Toerien theatre and Teatro regularly host shows suitable for mature audiences. Comfortable seating, good acoustics, accessible facilities. Book matinee performances.

  • Art Galleries

Everard Read Gallery (Rosebank) – Free entry, beautiful space. Goodman Gallery – Contemporary art in a welcoming setting.

  • Coffee with a Friend

Sometimes the best activity is the simplest. Tashas, Doppio Zero, the café at Nicolway, or any favourite restaurant of their choosing.

  • Local Church, Mosque, Temple or Synagogue

For many seniors, places of worship are the heart of their social lives. If your loved one has stopped attending, accompanying them back is one of the most meaningful things you – or a Serene Assist companion – can do.

  • Garden Centres

The northern suburbs are well-supplied with beautiful garden centres. A slow browse through plants and flowers is calming, sensory and surprisingly social.
